18 sep ’87 (‘Parochiezaal’): No Allegiance (Ger), Hate Crew (Bel), Death Angel (USA)

There’s some more info about this on the introductionary page Hageland Hardcore concerts Scherpenheuvel

‘No Allegiance’ was the band of David Pollack (Destiny recs, Berlin). He was the singer; the others were Dietmar Jahr (guitra), Ilja Schellschmidt (bass; later ‘Combat Not Conform’) & Klaus Budach (drums). The day after this they played the DOL festival (@ ‘Gemeentezaal’, Overpelt), together with ‘Poison Girls’ (UK), ‘Raw Power’ (Ita), etc.

‘Death Angel’ was recorded from the audience here by Steve W.: “Not really super quality but it came out alright after some major EQ’ing & whatnot. The band is shit hot & super tight here & the crowd are loving it. The very last track seems to be an unreleased song that didn’t appear on their first 3 albums (it’s called Dehumanization). So here’s a nice, tight & blistering 70 minute set of Bay-Area thrash”.

De Finkel was the youthcentre for young people in Jette from the mid ’70s to the beginning of the ’90s.

As in other youthcentres in the Brussels area during that period, the initiative to start up a meetingplace for youngsters arose in a ‘bottom up’ manner. There was no low-treshold meetingspace for the baby-boomers – young people of 20 in the ’70s – in Jette during that period, except for the pubs or ‘taverns’ in the municipality (that were heavily frequented after school-time an/or on Sunday-afternoons after activities of the youth-movements). In the light of all this De Finkel was born.

By the end of its existence as youthecentre, the relation with the local administration would certainly become often ‘problematic’. Not in the least because De Finkel got associated with the Dutch-speaking, Flemish youth of Jette and the northeast of Brussels, while during the ’70s Jette was a municipality with a mainly French-speaking population, which was reflected in its  administration, and hence the youth-policy. The aim of the younthcentre’s  activists was nevertheless always opening up towards all languages and cultures. In the end De Finkel was a meetingplace for the metropolitan youth, with music being a binding factor. The location where the youthcentre was started, couldn’t have been a better one: an abandoned brewery: a big, industrial, concrete building adjacent of the Garcet park, near the Jette railway-station.

From the mid ’70s on many concerts, parties and a pub got organised. The youngsters of Jette and surroundings reacted very positively to this new offer, what translated into e.g. huge memberships – some 300 – of young people that wanted to make use of De Finkel. A yearly acme for the activists during that period was the ‘Finkel Festival’, taking place the last weekend of August augustus and where a lot of the established values and pioneers of the Belgian pop- and rock-scene played: Raymond van het Groenewoud, ‘TC Matic’, ‘The Employees’, ‘Red Zebra’, etc.

From the middle of the ’80s on De Finkel ended up in difficult existential waters. Not just because of its ever strained relations with the local administrations, but also because of the changing public. The pioneers of the ’70s declutched and their place was taken by the often alternative new-wave and punk youngsters of Brussels. Their pick of meetingplaces and alternative music-venues in Brussels had gotten quite more extensive (DNA, the university’s Kultuurkaffee, Ancienne Belgique, …) in the meantime, what meant that De Finkel was less and less able to attract collaborators and volunteers.

We [‘Indecency’, ‘5Les’] rehearsed there. On Sunday-mornings, with free Kriek [cherry-beer]. Our first rehearsal was legendary. We’d never played together and Chris had never held a microphone before. I was thinking: we’ll invite an audience. One of the first concerts I went to was at De Finkel (‘Zyklome-A’, ‘Wulpse Varkens’ & ‘Scoundrels’.

I remember we did a great concert on August 30 1987 [Brob: a hot, sweaty sunday afternoon] in some kind of theatre [Brob: actually a parish-hall] there but we had start with a big delay beacuse the PA didn’t show up, so people had to find a equipment in a hurry. Maybe the show was supposed to be in open air [Brob: the crowd was desperate to go outside in between bands; Stinky (vocals and guitar in my band ‘Repulsives’) had so much to drink we had to carry him…] but I’m not sure. It was a big show with ‘Rhythm Pigs’, ‘Heresy’ and some other bands. [Brob: The day before ‘Repulsives’ was supposed to play with them in Winterswijk (Nl) but we couldn’t make it ’cause we were about to split…]

87-07-06 Scherpenheuvel - Suicidal T, Capital S bisbiscut

6 jul ’87 (‘Parochiezaal’): Suicidal Tendencies (USA), Unwanted Youth (Ger), Capital Scum (Bel), [Upset Noise (Ita) =>] L.W.S. (Ger)

There’s some more info about this on the introductionary page Hageland Hardcore concerts Scherpenheuvel

From a local newspaper (summer ’87)…

>>American ‘Suicidal Tendencies’ demonstrate in Scherpenheuvel’s parish-hall *** Fun: music at the speed of an express-train and than jump of stage in the crowd<<

Five years ago a few teenagers from Venice, Los Angeles formed a band and called themselves ‘Suicidal Tendencies’. Their music, a combination of hardcore and heavy metal left people indifferent at first: too punk for the metal-fans, too heavy for the punks; but their debut-album, released in ’83, sold 150.000 and the single ‘Institutionalized’ (heavy metal rap avant-la-lettre) was even picked up by commercial radio-stations and MTV. The quartet signed a deal with Virgin, draws audiences of 4000 in the US and were even hosted in ‘Miami Vice’

Their 1st European tour (they’re playing in Japan and Australia soon) guided them to Scherpenheuvel’s parish-hall (!), where 600 fans – recognisable by their baseball-caps, bandanas, checkered shirts and shorts – showed hardly any interest for the double support – the Belgian ‘Capital Scum’ and the German ‘Unwanted Youth – but went crazy for about an hour on the ultra-energetic speedcore; still the new music for today. For the outsider, the sight of the -diving and ‘slamming’ crowd is at least astonishing.

“Stage-diving started around ’79-’80.”, singer Mike Muir told us before the show. “It begun with enthusiastic fans climbing on stage and were pushed off by the roadies. Slam-dancing evolved from the pogo, the music was even faster so there was more pushing and shoving. It looks like a frenzied affair but the kids know what they’re doing. After a concert they all go home with a smile on their faces.”

The amount of victims from the daring dives in Scherpenheuvel remained indeed zero but in amidst the bustle a girl lost her balance and had to be taken to hospital for a few stitches. For the rest there was a touching atmosphere of fun and excitement because the chubby ‘Suicidal Tendencies’ guys (they look much older than their average age of 22) rammed the new songs of the 2nd album ‘Join the Army’ plus some of the older songs at the speed of an express-train through the speakers. Only a single sorehead was disturbed by the poor vocal abilities of Mike Muir.

“In the beginning we had to hear several times we wouldn’t get anywhere with our music.”, the man tells us. “But the term ‘suicidal’ for us means exactly that we force ourselves to do things, that we don’t allow ourselves to be foiled by what others say and don’t take ‘no’ for an answer. A lot of people don’t achieve anything in life because they don’t even take the trouble to try. But if you believe in yourself, you can determine your own fate. We did prove that, I think.”
