De Kiët

De Kiët (which means something like ‘the shack’ in the dialect of Aalst) was a bit of a dingy metal pub (at a certain timepoint ran by aunty Taeleman -Veerle-, sister of ‘Rough Justice’s singer Koen) with a stage where bands could play. Since the HC/punk-scene crossed over with the metal-scene quite a bit those days, it happened that HC/punx hung out there. Certainly when hardcore bands were invited… I recall bands like ‘Hate Crew’, ‘Heibel’, ‘Ear Damage’ playing there; probably ‘Cyclone’, ‘X-Creta’, ‘Violent Mosquitos’, ‘Rough Justice’ aswell… And ‘Cólera’!

  1. I think that was the gig with ‘Wardance’ (ex ‘English Dogs’). Hardly any people there… Was when ‘Heibel’ was ending, probably by then Steven didn’t play with us anymore. We played the Kiët twice. The first time was still with Bollie; together with ‘Cyclone’. Loads of people then.
    Keep on rockin’

  2. I have no fond recollections of our (‘Ear Damage’) gig with ‘Cyclone’ in De Kiet. Cross-over may have been loved by many but there was a real hostility between punks and metals that exploded into serious fights that night at the pub. I remember ‘Cyclone’ trying their best to calm down the hostile crowds but some serious injuries were caused.

  3. Hey! For some reason I kept track of all ‘Heibel’-gigs so:
On August 23rd 1986 De Kiet got visited by ‘Ear Damage’, ‘Heibel’ & ‘Cyclone’. The place was packed that night so I’m guessing these photo’s are from another date. (Bollie was “singing” that night in ’86.) Probably July 9th 1988, with ‘Heibel’ & ‘Wardance’. Peter replaced Bollie in August 1987 but Steven didn’t leave untill 1990 (the ‘Ear Damage’ – ‘Heibel’ Spain tour was still to come in december 1989). Maybe he was sick that day ? :-)

  4. We used to hang out at the Kiet in the late 80’s and saw many a band come and go, though memories are beer-dusty, at best. I was madly in love with one of the bartenders, Marc and spent many a night upstairs in the quarters after closing with band-members and him, continueing the drink-fest. These pictures brought back a lot of memories. Good times, yes, gooooood times.
My father worked for NATO, we were stationed in Belgium for eight years and I found metal at the age of 16. My girlfriend and I would take the train to Aalst every Saturday. Great memories.
